For some reason, the photo Gisele Bündchen posted on Instagram before the Victoria Secret Fashion show has sparked a rage of controvery.
Personally, I’m not so sure I understand why people are torn over this. She’s feeding her child while getting ready for work. Yes, there is a team of people surrounding her, but I’ve seen public displays of nudity more risque than that at the local coffee shop. Plus, her breasts are her living – in this photo she is on the verge of displaying them encased in lingerie for millions to see.
I do realize that she was on her soapbox when posing for this photo. She has stated on more than one occasion that her personal preference would be to have bottles banned.
“Some people here (in the U.S.) think they don’t have to breastfeed, and I think ‘Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?’” she told Harper’s Bazaar UK in 2010 after having her son, Benjamin. “I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months.”
Breastfeeding is natural. Unfortunately, breastfeeding a child over one year old has become somewhat of a taboo – at least in the US. I have personally received reactions ranging from “good for you” to “ooohhhhhhh” with a quick change of subject. And while I completely understand the need to wean earlier due to work or a personal need, problems with supply, or a need to get your body back, what I don’t understand is why there is such a stigma against breastfeeding a toddler.
Until the last 50 or so years, this was how babies were always fed. Working women and the convenience of other methods have made breastfeeding not so popular, but the fact remains that it is still nature’s very best food for a growing child. I mean, it’s specifically formulated for each individual baby!
But back to Gisele. I think the photo is stunning – much more beautiful than anything she wore down the runway. So “good for you” Gisele! Thank you for taking a stand and not being afraid of the response a photo like this was sure to get.
