First Nap in the Crib (and a Sneak Peek at the Nursery)

Yesterday marked the first time that Griffin took a nap in his actual crib!

Until this point he has been exclusively sleeping in either the Pack n Play bassinet, or one of several seats that we’ve purchased in an attempt to find something he enjoys.

Today he took two more naps in the crib, but he’s certainly not used to being on a flat surface quite yet.

Did we make a mistake with the bassinet? Each night and for every nap he lays in a cradle-like environment that cocoons him comfortably. I guess we can only wean him from them all and slowly get him used to the idea.

Either way the nursery is beautiful and I’m so excited to begin making use of it!

For the Love of Pooh

It’s no secret I’m a Disney fan. I love everything about it, especially traveling there! We’ll be heading that direction in less than a week for our Babymoon, and will of course be bringing along an empty carry-on for purchases!

Even though our nursery isn’t Winnie the Pooh themed, I would still like to add a few elements from this beloved children’s story. Here are some of my favorites!

This quote would be perfect somewhere on the wall – over the crib, perhaps?

There’s just something endearing about his obsession with sweets!

I may try to reproduce Pooh and the tree somewhere in the room. Perhaps on canvas to hang above the dresser or in the bathroom.

This print is available in Disney World at the art gallery. I think it would be a fantastic image for Baby White to contemplate as he gets his diaper changed!

Now to just decide which will make the cut!

Things I Love

I just received 7 custom pillows from a shop owner at Etsy. I absolutely adore them! We decided to go with a Peter Pan theme nursery, and I want everything down to the smallest detail to be very Never Land/Pirate.

Janet, the lovely shop owner of Maison Vogue, did a fantastic job matching the fabric with my baby bedding, and also scrounging up some original Peter Pan and Wendy illustrations by F.D. Bedford. While a bit small at 8×11, they are the perfect size for accenting the glider, as well as filling space on bookshelves!

Crib Mattresses – A Guide

We finally purchased a mattress for the crib after countless hours of stress and confusion. As I’ve mentioned, the world of Baby is a complicated one, filled with gear of inexplicable value and an entirely new language.

Mattresses were my first foray into that world.

Luckily, my Sister-in-Law, the same one who recommended The Ultimate Crib Sheet, came to the rescue once again with a book that has been invaluable when circumnavigating all this baby stuff!

I would HIGHLY recommend that any parent purchase this book – whether it’s your first child or not. The book may be titled Baby Bargains, but its not really a guide for getting gear for cheap. It’s actually more of a guide for getting the best quality products – no matter the cost. They have a ranking system that includes price, certainly, but it also includes durability, company reputation, and environmental safety among other things. This book, combined with The Complete Organic Pregnancy, have been life savers, helping stave off the migraines and keep the stress at bay!

The Key Things I’ve Learned when Looking for a Crib Mattress:

  • Firmness – Because of the risk of SIDS, the firmer the mattress, the better. This can change when you make the switch to a toddler bed, and many crib mattresses come with a 2-in-1 component – flip the mattress for a softer, toddler-friendly option.
  • Thickness – Make sure crib sheets fit very snugly. Mattresses vary in thickness from 4-6 inches, and some sheets won’t fit a 6 inch mattress. Again, there’s a risk of SIDS if the sheets don’t fit properly.
  • Mattress Size – The mattress should fit into the crib with no more than 2 fingers width of room on all sides. Most mattresses come in a standard size, so this is typically not a problem.
  • Foam or Coil – This is a personal preference. However, foam mattresses are lighter, making midnight sheet changes much easier. For example, foam mattresses hover around 8lbs, while coil can run up to 20 or 30 pounds! Foam mattresses are generally less expensive, as well. Keep in mind that many large chain baby stores stock a majority of coil mattresses – you may be better off buying online.
  • Cost  – In the case of mattresses, many times you get what you pay for. Cheap foam mattresses may be light weight and low cost, but will also not take much wear and tear, and may contain harmful chemicals. Same goes for coil.
  • Chemicals – Conventional mattresses contain dangerous chemicals, whether foam or coil. It’s possible to purchase a crib mattress that is safer than conventional, but without the price tag of an organic version if price is a concern.

The best mattress companies I found ranged from “less chemical”, to fully organic.

Good: Moonlight Slumber’s Little Dreamer – $170-185. Foam mattress that has a PVC free, “hospital grade” vinyl cover. Dual-zone firmness, one side for baby, the other for toddler.

Better: Lullaby Earth – Under $200. New division of Naturepedic, debuting in 2012. Affordable eco-friendly lightweight foam mattress. Features seamless edges and is Greenguard Certified. Two-stage firmness for both baby and toddler.

Best: Naturepedic – $260-330. Offers a coil version as well, but the Organic Cotton Lightweight foam is the better option at half the weight. Seamless, dual-zone firmness for baby and toddler, and has an Organic Cotton Ultra option as an upgrade, which offers a stronger, more durable cover. Waterproof or Quilted options. All mattresses are Organic and Greenguard Certified, and they have a wonderfully helpful website!

So as it may sound, we went all the way and purchased the big guy at Naturepedic, also getting an organic mattress pad for the waterproof mattress.

We Ordered our Glider Today!

After spending yesterday afternoon with Jeremy’s mother, searching high and low for a glider that was both cute and cozy, we finally decided to custom make our own! The Plaid Rabbit – which I’ve mentioned before – has two brands of chairs that they order from; Little Castle and Best Chair. Both mom-in-law and I didn’t care for the fabric either company offered though, so we made a trip to the fabric store and picked some out for ourselves!

We went with Little Castle. They seemed to have cuter designs. I was shocked at how reasonably priced the chair was in comparison with Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware…even the furniture stores in Nashville. For reference, Poshtots.com has Little Castle gliders in a variety of fabrics. Like I said, the prices seemed really great!

We picked out the Hassock Ottoman and Cottage Glider, and are getting them to cover it with a Seaglass blue velvet fabric that we found for only $16 per yard! Trust me, this was mere happenstance. That fabric not only matched the bedding I chose, but was on sale because the store had ordered too much. Thank you, Jesus!

Seaglass Satin Velvet by Bella Notte – for the Crib Bumper

The fabric is almost identical to what we chose for the bumper – and yes, I went with the Satin Velvet by Bella Notte! It was just too pretty to say no to.

I can’t wait to begin putting everything into the room. One week from today we’ll know if baby White is a little boy or girl – and then I can start adding the details!

The Ultimate Crib Sheet

During my tentative foray into the world of baby, I’ve come across something that just may make our lives a whole lot easier – The Ultimate Crib Sheet!

Actually, it was my Sister-in-Law who steered me towards these sheets. As the mom of twins, she has mastered the art of the quick midnight sheet change, and swears by this particular brand.

Instead of having to change sheets in the middle of the night, taking the time to lift up the mattress, tuck everything in, and make sure the sheets are tightly fitted (which is apparently a must-do), you simply use this sheet instead.

I want to get as many natural, organic products as possible. I know this isn’t a realistic goal in every aspect of the nursery, but where sheets are concerned, there seems to be plenty of options.

Well, not only is this sheet organic, it’s also a mattress pad, super absorbent, and waterproof! AND it’s quick change – how much better can you possibly get? I’m thinking of purchasing 10 of these things right now and just putting them away until December rolls around.

How is it quick change? I wondered the same thing. Apparently the sheet attaches to the crib with elastic straps, and you just unhook them when a change is needed. If you look closely at the photo above, you can see the straps hooked around the crib rails.

Someone mentioned that if you’re short – which I am – it might be a little more difficult to get to the straps in the back. But tucking a sheet in would pose the same problem, so I’m not too worried about that!

Baby Crib Purchase!

Last night was a very momentous occasion for Jeremy and me – we got home from dinner with his parents and purchased our baby’s crib!

I’ve had my eye on the Jourdan crib from Restoration Hardware for a couple months now, so we finally decided it was time to go ahead and buy. After all, it could take a while to ship, and I want to start decorating the nursery!

We also went ahead and bought the conversion kit so that when the time comes it can be made into a toddler bed. How adorable is this bed?! It reminds me of Goldilocks and The Three Bears for some reason.

We learn the sex of the baby in three weeks…until then I guess I’ll just shop for as many gender-neutral items as possible. I really love the below bedding, but what do you think about that blanket and bumper? Satin Velvet? I can only imagine them being washed once a day…they would both be in tatters after the first month!

Nursery Inspiration – Yo Ho Yo Ho

A nautical/pirate/Peter Pan-ish or Mermaid themed nursery can be great for a little boy or girl…especially the bathrooms! That’s why I’ve compiled such a big list of things I love with this theme in mind.
